Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Holiday Cookies: Our Family Tradition

Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Holiday Cookies

The older I get, the more I realize traditions are not just “things we do.” They are the threads that hold families together. They show up year after year, even when life looks different. They remind us who we are, who raised us, and what we want our kids to carry forward.

One tradition in my family has been going strong since before I was born. Every December, we bake our family’s Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Holiday Cookies in big batches and gift it to neighbors, coworkers, family, and friends.

My mom and my uncle started this tradition when they were younger. I still smile thinking about the stories of their biggest baking day. I heard one year they made over 30 pounds of cookies. That is not a “cute little baking afternoon.” That is a full holiday production, the kind that makes your house smell like butter and chocolate for days.

When I was growing up, my mom and I baked them together every year. I loved the time with her, and I loved the little jobs that made me feel important. I also loved sampling the “gifts.” Quality control matters.

Sometimes our neighbors joined in too, which turned baking day into something even bigger. More laughter, more hands, more stories floating through the kitchen while the cookie sheets rotated in and out of the oven.

Now, I continue the tradition with our children. It is one of the sweetest ways to slow down during a season that can move too fast. And it is the perfect reminder that the best gifts are often the simplest ones.

The recipe behind our tradition

Our base is the classic Nestlé Toll House chocolate chip cookie recipe. For gifting, we make a double batch and add a few signature twists.

  • We stir in 4 cups of old fashioned oats per double batch.
  • We add 1 cup chopped walnuts per double batch.
  • And we top each cookie with three red and green M and Ms, placed upside down.

As a kid, one of my jobs was sorting the red and green M and Ms. Then my mom made sure we placed the M side down so the letters would not show. It became our little signature detail. Tiny, simple, and very us.

Double batch holiday cookie recipe (our gifting version)

This is our family’s adapted version of the classic Toll House recipe.

Yield

About 60 to 72 cookies, depending on scoop size

Prep time

25 minutes

Bake time

9 to 12 minutes per tray

Total time

About 1 hour 30 minutes, depending on how many trays you bake

Ingredients

Dry ingredients

  • 540 g all purpose flour (4 1/2 cups)
  • 10 g baking soda (2 tsp)
  • 12 g fine sea salt (2 tsp)

Wet ingredients

  • 4 sticks (2 cups)
  • 300 g granulated sugar (1 1/2 cups)
  • 330 g packed light brown sugar (1 1/2 cups)
  • 10 g vanilla extract (2 tsp)
  • 4 large eggs (about 200 g without shells)

Mix ins

  • 680 g semi sweet chocolate chips (24 oz)
  • 320 g old fashioned oats (about 4 cups)
  • 120 g chopped walnuts (about 1 cup)

Topping

  • Red and green M and Ms, 3 per cookie (plan for 180 to 216 pieces)

Optional

  • Flaky sea salt to finish (a tiny pinch on top is so good)

Step by step instructions

  1. Heat the oven to 375°F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream the softened butter with the granulated sugar and brown sugar until fluffy, about 2 to 3 minutes.
  4. Add vanilla, then add eggs one at a time, mixing until combined after each.
  5. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. Mix just until the flour disappears.
  6. Next, fold in chocolate chips, oats, and walnuts until evenly mixed.
  7. Scoop dough onto the prepared baking sheets. A 1 1/2 tbsp scoop makes a classic cookie. Leave space between cookies.
  8. Place three M and Ms on top of each dough mound. Althernate 2 Red and 1 Green and 2 Green and 1 Red. Press them in gently so they stick. Turn them letter side down.
  9. Bake 9 to 12 minutes, until edges look golden and centers look set but still soft.
  10. Transfer to a rack to cool completely.

Baking day rhythm (the way we keep it joyful)

If you are making these for gifting, a little rhythm helps. Otherwise, it can feel like cookie chaos.

  • First, set out a “topping station” for the kids with sorted red and green M and Ms.
  • Meanwhile, mix the dough and scoop onto trays.
  • Then let the kids add the M and Ms while you prep the next tray.
  • Finally, rotate trays through the oven and start cooling stacks.

This keeps everyone involved, and it also turns the baking into time together, not just a task.

Tips for Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Holiday Cookie consistency

  • Use softened butter, not melted. Softened butter helps cookies bake thicker and chewier.
  • If your dough feels warm or sticky, chill it for 20 to 30 minutes. This helps prevent spreading.
  • Bake one test tray first. As a result, you can adjust bake time and scoop size before you commit to the full batch.

How we gift our Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Holiday Cookies:

This is my favorite part.

Once the Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Holiday Cookies cool completely, we arrange them on a plate, wrap it in cellophane, and share them with neighbors, coaches, teachers, and friends. Sometimes we tuck in a coffee gift card too, because cookies and coffee are basically a holiday love language.

Gifting tips

  • Let cookies cool fully before packaging so they stay crisp at the edges.
  • Add parchment between layers if you stack them.
  • If you are driving them around, use a sturdy tray or box so they arrive intact.

Storage and make ahead

  • Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
  • Freeze baked cookies up to 2 months. Thaw at room temperature.
  • Freeze cookie dough balls up to 2 months. Bake from frozen and add 1 to 2 minutes to bake time.

Memory Moment ❤️

I can still see myself at the counter, sorting M and Ms by color, feeling like it was the most important job in the whole world.

That is the quiet magic of traditions. They make small moments feel big. They give kids a role and a sense of belonging. And years later, those are the details you remember.

If you bake these this season, take one photo of the messy counter and the cooling racks. Then take one short video of the laughter. That is the part you will want to keep.
